At the age of fifteen, Eggleston was sent to the Webb School, a boarding school in Bell Buckle, Tennessee.
“It had a kind of Spartan routine to ‘build character.’ I never knew what that was supposed to mean. It was so callous and dumb. It was the kind of place where it was considered effeminate to like music and painting.” W. Eggleston (link)
“One of the older students used to tell me, ‘Eggleston, I don’t know whether to call you “shit-tit” or “tit-shit.”" (link)

I’m not sure how Webb / Bell Buckle has developed over the years, but I was a graduate of Webb / Knoxville in the early 1990s. At least when I was there, the art students had a reasonable amount of “mindshare.” Not that the administration liked it — we ended up rocking the boat more than they wanted.
The Webb family is an interesting group of people — they founded at least three schools, two in Tennessee, and one in California. For the South, it’s unusual because they were fairly non-denominational.

Hey, that’s my scan!
Eggleston also attended several different colleges, and never finished one of them.
But that didn’t stop him from teaching at MIT.
